WORLD
MATCH RACING TOUR (Former Swedish Match
Tour)
OVERVIEW
The World Match Racing Tour, the
successor to the Swedish Match Tour, and the International
Sailing Federation, ISAF, the world governing body
for the sport of sailing, signed on January 2006
a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), marking the
first phase in the achievement of a long-term partnership
to create a new World Match Racing Tour.
The MOU sets out the objectives of the partnership
in which ISAF will grant the World Match Racing
Tour “ISAF Special Event” status. Among other benefits,
Special Event status allows the tour to use the
word “World” in marketing and promotion.
In addition, from 2007 onwards, the winner of the
World Match Racing Tour will be awarded the title
of ISAF Match Racing World Champion
The Swedish Match Tour was formed in 1999 to unite
the world’s best match-race regattas under one banner.
The goal was to create more international coverage
for the events and interest throughout the season
by crowning an overall Tour champion at the end
of the year.
The Tour consolidates the world’s top match-racing
events under a single name and provides the world’s
leading sailors and up-and-coming stars with a fair,
even forum to hone and showcase their skills.
Through its first seven years the Swedish Match
Tour has become a proving ground for experienced
match-race teams, America’s Cup teams and up-and-coming
stars of the match-racing discipline.
The new World Match Racing Tour features 10 of the
premier ISAF-graded match-racing events. Competitors
earn points towards the championship based on their
finish at the individual events.
THE
2006-2007 Tour
Currently in its eigth racing season,
the World Tour begins with the 3rd annual Portugal
Match Cup in Cascais, from the 18th to 23th July
2006.
The new Tour season will be the first full season
awarding the ISAF World Match Racing Championship.
In January 2006, ISAF, sailing’s world governing
body, and the World Tour entered an extensive partnership
that crowns the match-racing world champion through
the series of events on the World Tour.
The upcoming season is an extended one, running
through December 2007. The Tour will revert to a
calendar year schedule in 2008. The season will
count 16 stages. Because of the extended season,
some events will be contested twice.
