Overall
On Friday, lack of wind gusts, which averaged six knots in the morning, delayed the race. But after an hour and a half delay, winds picked up to an average of 12-14 knots, which were strong enough to start the final race.

Bermuda’s Peter Bromby and Martin Siese win Friday’s race and capture the 74th Annual Bacardi Cup Star-Class Regatta. In the Regatta’s first race, Bromby, who finished fourth in the 2000 Olympics, broke his outhaul, which caused the sailors to get tagged with a "did not finish" and 81st place. But after Sunday’s mishap, Bromby and Siese had incredible consistency, garnering a fifth-, first- and third-place finish. Coupled with Friday’s victory, the duo finished with series-low 10 points.

The next best score was turned in by Australia’s Colin Beashel and David Giles, who had 20 points. As is the case with a long series, consistency typically wins out.

Heading into Friday’s fifth and final race, Brazil’s Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira technically held a one-point lead over Americans Paul Cayard and Hal Haenel. But once Friday’s race set sail, teams were allowed to throw out their worst finish in the five-race Regatta. Grael and Ferreira, the Sydney Olympic bronze medalists, finished 73rd.Friday, knocking them down to fifth overall. Cayard, who won the 88-89 Whitbred Round the World Race, finished in third place overall -- the highest American finisher. Despite coming in 2nd place on Friday, defending Olympic gold medalists Mark Reynolds and Miami’s Magnus Liljedahl, who won the opening race of the Regatta, were too inconsistent in the three other races.

Races 3 & 4
With one race remaining in the 74th Annual Bacardi Cup Star Class Regatta, a handful of the world's best sailors find themselves in a position to capture the prestigious Trofeo Bacardi.

Today, wind of around 8 knots from the east allowed race officials to hold two races on Biscayne Bay. And now, after four total races, Brazil's Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira cling to a one-point lead over Americans Paul Cayard and Hal Haenel. In a long series, consistency is the name of the game. And Grael and Ferreira, who won Wednesday's race, have been consistent throughout the entire regatta, including Thursday's 17th- and 6th-place finishes.Rod Davis and Mark Dolan finished 37th and 7th, dropping the pair to 7th overall.

Race 2
After two days of uncooperative weather, the world's best sailors took to Miami's Biscayne Bay for the second race of the Bacardi Cup Star-Class Regatta. With winds gusting at an average of 12-15 knots, Brazil's Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira chose the left side of the starting line - away from most of the 65-fleet field - and led from start to finish to easily win Wednesday's race.

The victory, however, was not good enough to catapult the Olympic bronze medalists to first place overall. The top spot in the Bacardi Cup now belongs to Australian skipper Colin Beashel and crew David Giles, who finished in second place for the second consecutive race. Grael and Ferreira, who are competing in their fourth Bacardi Cup, are in second place overall.

Olympic gold medalists Mark Reynolds and Magnus Liljedahl, who won the opening race, finished 17th Wednesday, dropping the pair to 5th overall. Liljedahl won the BACARDI Cup in 1997 and 1998 with Reynolds and in 1996 with Vince Brun. Reynolds, from San Diego, is a six-time Bacardi Cup champion.

Paul Cayard finished 13th Wednesday with his crew, Hal Haenel, putting the Americans in fourth place overall. Rod Davis and Mark Dolan (New Zealand) are third.

Because inclement weather caused races to be postponed Monday and Tuesday, race officials have scheduled two races for Thursday. Racing ends on Friday.

Race 1
Mark Reynolds and Magnus Liljedahl, who won the 2000 Olympic gold medal in the Star Class - won Sunday afternoon's race in what Liljedahl called ideal racing conditions in Miami's Biscayne Bay. With wind gusts as high as 18 knots, the pair led from the first windward mark by 30 seconds and never looked back, winning the opening race over Australia's Colin Beashel and David Giles.

Always attracting the world’s top Star Class sailors, this year’s BACARDI Cup features 65 teams from around the world, including some of the top names in sailing. Brazilians Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreina, Olympic bronze medalists behind Reynolds and Liljedahl, finished fourth on Sunday. Paul Cayard inished third Sunday with his crew, Hal Haenel. Rod Davis and Mark Dolan were 6th.

Unlike Monday, the race started without a hitch. At first, weather conditions on Miami’s Biscayne Bay were ripe for racing, but midway through the race it soon became apparent to the race committee that the conditions were rapidly deteriorating.

The regatta runs through Friday, March 9. Boats are allowed to throw out their worst finish of six races. All participants sail aboard 22-foot Olympic Class Star sloops.
