Perfect conditions today : bright blue skies
and autumnal temperatures with winds in the 14-16 knot range.
Local skipper Markus Wieser has won the Swedish Match Tour's
Match Race Lake Constance, an ISAF Grade 1 regatta, presented
by Volvo in Langenargen, Germany. He win his first grade 1
title, beating Alinghi Swiss Challenge's Jochen Schümann
3 wins to 2 losses in the championship final.
Weiser took early control of the finals, winning the first
two matches and then watched in horror as Schumann, ranked
17th in the world, refused to go down, winning the next two
to force a fifth and deciding match. In the fifth match Wieser
took command, winning the start, and sailed a clean, controlled
race.
The Swedish Match Tour's other regular competing in Germany,
Prada Challenge's Rod Davis, enjoyed early success in the
regatta, winning Group A of the round robin with five wins
and zero defeats. However Davis was defeated by Philippe Presti
in the petit final two races to one and ultimately finished
Fourth.
In the semifinals finished earlier in the day, both Schümann
and Wieser defeated their opponents, Presti and Davis, respectively,
three races to one.

Jochen Schümann (Alinghi Swiss Challenge) and Markus
Wieser led their German crews into the semi-finals of the
Lake Constance Match Race in Langenargen (Germany) this
afternoon. Both Schümann and Wieser defeated their
opponents, Karol Jablonski and Jesper Radich Johansen ,
respectively, two races to zero.
Joining the German couple were French Challenge's Philippe
Presti and Prada's Rod Davis who similarly swept past Oracle
Racing's Chris Dickson and Danish Jesper Radich Johansen,
respectively.
In the semi finals raced later in the day, Prada Challenge's
Rod Davis and Jochen Schumann of Ernesto Bertarelli's Swiss
Challenge are tied with their opponents at one win in each
of their semifinals.
After advancing through Round Robin and Quarterfinal action
undefeated, Rod Davis dropped his first match of the regatta
to Markus Wiesser in his semifinal but quickly avenged
the loss by dispatching his German opponent in the second
match. Jochen Schümann likewise put himself behind
by losing the first match to Phillippe Presti of France
in the first-to-three-wins semifinals.
In the resulting sail-off action for places five through
eight Karol Jablonski (Poland) registered three wins to
claim fifth place. After dropping his first match to Jablonski,
Chris Dickson of Oracle Racing dispatched of Danes Jesper
Radich and Jes Gram-Hansen in succession to finish in sixth.
Gram-Hansen defeated his countryman to finish seventh.

On the second day of Lake Constance Match
Race, in winds reaching 18 knots and under a steady rainfall,
the round robin series for group "A" was completed.
Rod Davis (Prada Challenge), Karol Jablonski, Philippe Presti
(le Défi Français) and Jesper Radich Johansen
reached the quarterfinal. Rod Davis had 5 wins and no defeat.
Karol Jablonski and Philippe Presti has 3 wins while Jesper
R. Johansen has 2 wins.
The 5 flights of round robin group "B" were also
completed. Jochen Schümann (Alinghi Swiss Challenge),
Markus Wieser, Chris Dickson (Oracle Racing) and Jes Gram-Hansen
reached the quarterfinal.
Skippers eliminated from the quarterfinals include Swede Magnus
Holmberg of Team Stora Enso who just two days ago claimed
the Swedish Match Tour Year 2, with two events remaining on
the schedule, at the ACI Ronhill Cup in Split, Croatia. Joining
Holmberg on-the-outside-looking-in are 1999 Match Race Lake
Constance champion Neville Wittey, Luc Pillot of France and
Morten Henriksen of the illbruck Challenge.
In the quarter finals raced later in the day, Rod Davis then
took the first match of his first-to-two-wins quarterfinal
placing his opponent, Jes Gram-Hansen. Also up one race in
quarterfinal action at the close of today's racing were Markus
Wieser of Germany who is squared off against Karol Jablonski
of Poland; Phillippe Presti of France who has the upper hand
on Oracle Racing's Chris Dickson; and Jochen Schumann of the
Swiss Challenge looking down at Jesper Radich of Denmark.

Like in Split, Skippers was divided into two groups
("A" & "B"). Each group /All skippers
will sail a Round Robin where each skipper sails each other
skipper once. The four highest scoring skippers from each
group shall qualify for the next stage.
The following six helmsmen are currently in the Group "A"
: two french skippers Philippe Presti (le Défi
Français) and Luc Pillot, Rod Davis (representing
the Prada Challenge), the danish Jesper Radich Johansen,
Karol Jablonski (Poland) and the australian Neville Wittey.
Due to light conditions which left Lake Constance glass-like
for most of the day, event organizers were forced to postpone
the balance of the round robin. Today, only the first three
flights of Group "A"'s Round Robin to be completed.
At the close of racing, Karol Jablonski and Rod Davis were
undefeated with 3 wins a piece. Just behind were Jesper
R. Johansen, Philippe Presti and Neville Wittey at one win
against two defeats.
The Group "B" includes three-time German Olympic
champion Jochen Schumann, (representing Ernesto Bertarelli's
Swiss America's Cup campaign) as well as the winner of the
Swedish Match Tour Magnus Holmberg (Sweden) of Team StoraEnso
and the Swedish Victory Challenge. Other prominent match
racers will compete in this group such as Chris Dickson
(representing the US Oracle Racing Team), the german Markus
Wieser and two Danish skippers Morten Henriksen (Illbruck
Challenge) and Jes Gram Hansen.

A world class fleet has set sails for the
2001 Match Race Lake Constance (MRLC) in Langenargen at Lake
Constance in the south of Germany. This one and only German
grade one event represents the seventh stopover of the Swedish
Match Grand Prix Sailing Tour and will be presented by Volvo.
Twelve skippers representing seven countries and six America´s
Cup campaigns will compete for a total prize money of US-Dollar
100.000.
The starter´s list in Germany includes the 1996 ISAF Yachtsman
of the year and three times olympic champion Jochen Schümann,
representing Ernesto Bertarelli´s Swiss America´s Cup campaign
as well as the current leader of the Swedish Match Tour Magnus
Holmberg (Sweden).
Other prominent matchracers such as Luc Pillot from France,
Chris Dickson (NZL, representing the US America´s Cup Challenge
Oracle) or the two young Danish top ten skippers Jesper Radich
Johansen and Jes Gram Hansen will make this event very difficult
to win for any of the competitors..
With Frenchman Luc Pillot the number four of the World Match
Race rankings will be present as well as his country fellowman
Philippe Presti who was runner-up in the 2000 Soling Matchrace
Worlds. Kiwi Rod Davis will represent Italy´s Prada Challenge
and Morten Henriksen (DK), who signed with the German illbruck
Challenge as their head coach for matchracing, will sail under
the German flagg. Australia´s Neville Wittey will definitely
add some entertaining moments to this prestigious tour event
and Poland´s Karol Jablonski, Admiral´s Cup winner in 1993
with the German Team is hungry to prove his skills in this
fleet of experts.
