Under a gray, threatening, Scandinavian sky, and in front of more than two thousand spectators lining the seawall of Skovshoved Harbor, Swedish Victory Challenge skipper Magnus Holmberg defended his Danish Open championship. Holmberg and his Team StoraEnsor match race crew defeated Victory Challenge teammate, and local hero, Jesper Bank in the finals of the Swedish Match Tour's Danish Open 2001.

The win was also Holmberg's second consecutive victory on the Swedish Match Tour. Last month in Ravenna, Italy, Holmberg and crew won the Trombini Match Race. As a result, Holmberg, Swedish Match Tour Year 2 champion, has opened up a 30-point lead in the Swedish Match Tour Year 3 Championship standings.

Holmberg took a 2-0 lead in the finals by taking advantage of penalties by Bank in the starts of the first two matches. In match three, Bank took the fight to Holmberg and after establishing a slight advantage in the start forced Holmberg to the far left, stretching the course. This tactic put Holmberg on the defensive and allowed Bank to dictate the pace of the match, eventually building a twelve second lead around the leeward mark from which Holmberg never recovered.

In the decisive fourth match, a penalty once again proved a major difference. Bank copped one in the pre-start and Holmberg sailed away, albeit with only a slight lead, but it proved enough to reward the Swedish skipper with the victory.

In the petit final Peter Holmberg of Oracle Racing swept past Gavin Brady of the Prada Challenge to claim third place. Holmberg took advantage of several miscues by Brady including two penalties in the first match, one for hitting the windward mark on the first leg, and one penalty in the second match.

Earlier in the day, in semifinal action, Bank defeated Brady two matches to zero while Magnus Holmberg defeated Peter Holmberg two matches to one.

In the sail-offs, in an all Danish match-up, Jes Gram-Hansen and his Team Marienlyst match race team defeated Team Steff Houlberg, skippered by Jesper Radich 2-0 to claim fifth place. Morten Henriksen of the illbruck Challenge defeated Ben Ainslie of the OneWorld Challenge, skippering the Pizza La match race team 2-1 to claim seventh place.

Jesper Bank and his Victory Challenge crew swept past fellow Dane Jes Gram-Hansen and Team Marienlyst to continue their strong showing at the Swedish Match Tour's Danish Open 2001. Bank is joined in the semifinals by Victory Challenge teammate Magnus Holmberg, Prada Challenge's Gavin Brady and Oracle Racing's Peter Holmberg who staged a dramatic comeback, down two matches to zero in the best-of-five quaterfinals to advance.

Bank easily dispatched of his younger and less experienced opponent and served notice that his is the team to beat on championship Sunday on the waters of Skovshoved Harbor. In spite of the fact the Danish Open 2001 is only his second match race event this year, Bank has shown no rust this week and is clearly building on his ninth place finish at last month's Swedish Match Cup.

Bank's Victory Challenge teammate Magnus Holmberg and his Team StoraEnso match race crew advanced after dropping the first match of the quarters to Morten Henriksen of the illbruck Challenge. Holmberg and crew then rallied back to take three consecutive matches to sail into the next round.

Brady and Ben Ainslie of the OneWorld Challenge staged a see-saw battle in their quarterfinal confrontation. Brady won the first match of the day while Ainslie countered, winning matches two and three. The pendulum and ensuing momentum then swung in Brady's favor as the Italian skipper won matches four and five to take his place in Sunday's championship round.

The most dramatic match-up of the day featured local skipper Jesper Radich against Peter Holmberg and his Oracle Racing Team. Radich took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five quarterfinal and then had to sit and wait through a two-hour delay as the morning's light breeze all but disappeared. When sailing resumed Holmberg took advantage of a Radich penalty at the start to swing momentum in Oracle's favor. Holmberg and crew then won the starts in matches four and five to cap the rally.

In sail-offs for places nine - sixteen, Lars Nordbjerg of Denmark defeated Great Britain's Chris Law to claim ninth place. Law, sailing with a local Danish crew, was nonetheless pleased considering it was his first match racing event in several years. Denmark's Henrik Jensen then defeated Johnie Berntsson of Sweden, sailing in only his second Grade 1 regatta. Berntsson had made his debut on the highest level of the international match race scene last month at the Swedish Match Cup in Marstrand, Sweden where he similarly finsihed twelfth.

In the 13th place match, Danish amateur Jesper Feldt defeated the GBR Challenge skippered by Andy Beadsworth, competing for the first time in six months due to a broken bone in his hand. Finally, Murray Jones and his Alinghi crew defeated Sébastien Destrémau and Le Defi Français team to take 15th place.

Jesper Bank, representing the Victory Challenge for the 2003 America's Cup, received most of the attention prior to the Swedish Match Tour's Danish Open 2001. To this point, through the round robin portion of the regatta, Bank has lived up to his billing. Bank led the way, registering six wins, to sit atop the Group A standings as quarterfinal action looms on Saturday. Banks' only misstep on his methodical march to the quarterfinals was a loss to fellow Dane Henrik Jensen in Flight 2 on Thursday.

Also advancing from Group A is Bank's Victory Challenge teammate Magnus Holmberg and his Team StoraEnso match race crew (5 wins), Peter Holmberg of Oracle Racing (4 wins) and Ben Ainslie, skippering Team Pizza La comprised of members of the OneWorld Challenge (4 wins).

Leading the charge out of Group B are Danish "amateurs," and Swedish Match Tour regulars, Jesper Radich and Jes Gram-Hansen. These two Danes, while not as celebrated as their countryman Bank, have found a good deal of success on the Swedish Match Tour. Both skippers also got their starts in match racing at the school run by the organizers of the Danish Open 2001.

Gavin Brady of Prada Challenge and Morten Henriksen of the illbruck Challenge also advanced from Group B.

The two America's Cup syndicates finding themselves in dry-dock as the quarterfinals commence are the Sébastien Destrémau-led Le Défi Challenge and the GBR Challenge skippered by Andy Beadsworth. Each team registered two wins during the round robin.

The participation of eight America's Cup syndicates in the upcoming Danish Open 2001, August 14-19, north of Copenhagen, promises excellent competition on the waters of Skovshoved Harbor.

Following on the heels of the America's Cup Jubilee in Cowes, England, these eight America's Cup teams will trade the Jubilee's pomp and circumstance for their share of the Danish Open 2001's US$25,000 prize purse as well as valuable Swedish Match Tour Championship points.

Among the America's Cup skippers and teams in attendance are Swedish Match Tour Year 2 Champion Magnus Holmberg and his Stora Enso match race team comprised of members of the Victory Challenge syndicate. Holmberg and crew are defending champions of the Danish Open and find themselves atop the Swedish Match Tour Year 3 leaderboard after having won Year 3's first event, the Trofeo Challenge Roberto Trombini Match Race in Ravenna, Italy, in July.

Included in the crowd of America's Cuppers Holmberg will be facing is Jesper Bank, skippering a crew of Holmberg's Victory Challenge teammates; Peter Holmberg, a seasoned America's Cup veteran, who has taken over the reigns of Oracle Racing's match race team and is fresh off a third place finish in Italy; Morten Henriksen of the illbruck Challenge, competing in his third Swedish Match Tour event; Gavin Brady of Prada Challenge, runner-up to Holmberg in Swedish Match Tour Year 2; and GBR Challenge's Andy Beadsworth

Three relatively new faces to the Swedish Match Tour are Murray Jones of the Alinghi Challenge, Ben Ainslie of the OneWorld Challenge and Sebastien Destrémau of Le Defi Français. Destrémau will be leading Le Defi Challenge into its first appearance on the Swedish Match Tour since Bertrand Pacé fled his French roots to assist Team New Zealand in their defense.

Among the non-America's Cup teams in attendance are Swedish Match Tour regulars Jesper Radich and his Team Steff-Houlberg and Jes Gram-Hansen and his Team Hotel Marienlyst, ranked sixth and seventh, respectively, by ISAF. Other skippers participating, and their ISAF rankings, are Denmark's Henrik Jensen, twenty-third, Sweden's Johnie Berntsson, twenty-fourth, and Denmark's Lars Nordjerg and Jesper Feldt, twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth, respecitively.
