for the 2007 Cup were selected, a special evaluation
team directed by Jon Bilger will be send to visit
each of the Cities so that they could report their
findings to the Swiss syndicate.

receive a detailed report on weather and sea conditions.
The field of candidates, which had numbered more than

Marseilles
wants the America's Cup (03/30/03)
(source :

Jean-Claude Gaudin, mayor of Marseilles, said
on Friday he believed Marseilles had "strong attributes"
to host the 2007 America's Cup.
He pointed out that the City "likes the great
challenges" and had show their capacity to
organise a popular event with the football world
cup 1998.
As Alinghi is looking for a "nice and windy
place", Marseilles advances some charts and
offers 57 kilometers of littoral and an exceptional
bay with several possibilities of water area for
the regattas.
The current proposal for the syndicate bases seems
to be articulated around two previously disused
industrial area sites. First is l'Estaque
in north of Marseille, with its 11.000 square meters.
Then the site of the "J4" shed, near of the Vieux-Port,
with 5.000 square meters.
"We don't have all constructions to make",
explained France Gamerre, the City delegate to the
maritime businesses who had gone to Auckland during
the Cup. "We have already the bay, natural
spaces and the winds".
But nothing is gained. Last week, the Alinghi meteorologist
head came on the spot, with the assistance of Météo
France, to study the aerological situation in a
city which knows complex kind of winds.
The world's best skippers seemed to adapt to that
pretty well during the last competitions which proceeded
in Marseilles. The Race organizers released their
plans for the second edition of The Race, which
will start and finish there.
"We will put all the chances on our side and, if
needed, we will break our moneybox !", Jean-Claude
Gaudin concluded. "We need a general mobilization
to take up this challenge "

Eight cities in southern Europe are in the running
to host Team Alinghi's defense of the America's Cup.
The cities were selected from more than 60 from around
the world expressing interest. The eight have been
asked to provide more information before the list
is whittled down to four in May, Alinghi officials
said Thursday.
The bidding cities are: Barcelona, Palma de Majorca
and Valencia (Spain) ; Marseille (France) ; Naples,
Porto Cervo and Elba (Italy) ; and Lisbon (Portugal).
"We have ... sent them a request for additional technical
information, especially concerning meteorology, facilities
and infrastructure," said Michel Bonnefous, who is
in charge of the selection process.
"This document will enable us to standardize the information
at our disposal."
The final four sites will have to complete a fuller
dossier. A decision is expected before December 15.
The event is expected to take place in 2007. |

With the unveiling of Liguria and Lombardy's
joint bid to host the America's Cup 2007, a stronger
candidate was born in Italy.
Today, Sandro Biasotti et Roberto Formigoni, respectively
President of Liguria and Lombardy Region, presented
a new project during a press conference.
"Unity is strength", said Sandro Biasotti.
Ernesto Bertarelli said earlier this year that city
of Savona (on Liguria Cost) is a possible venue but
there are many ports and coastal towns in Europe who
want to bid for the privilege of hosting the 32nd
America’s Cup. |

The America's Cup in Naples has a new sponsor:
Vittorio Emanuele di Savoia. The royal family member
has said that he will work to bring the prestigious
competition to Italy, and more precisely to Naples.
This promise was made by the Prince to the president
of the yacht club Savoia, Pippo Dalla Vecchia, who
today received the prince along with about one hundred
members for lunch. The sailing contest was the central
theme of the two's conversation.
"I know Bertarelli very well - said Vittorio Emanuele
- and I am very happy to make myself available to
reach this aim."
The staging of the America's Cup in Naples is a long
standing dream of Dalla Vecchia, who now has an authoritative
ally to help make it come true.
"I'm not sure if we'll do it - said the President
of the club - but if we were successful it would be
thanks to his Highness. Naples could not have a better
ally."
The business of the sailing competition could also
be helped by the support of the president for the
Campania region Antonio Bassolino, the special delegate
from Palazzo Chigi.
"We will set to work straight away - said Della Vecchia.
First of all I will go to Geneva and then the Prince
will come back to Naples. We will be our discreet
action but at the highest levels." |

During the Quimper boat show (Salon Nautique
de Quimper), the French fishing port of Douarnenez,
in the person of it's Mayor Monique Prévost, has announced
its desire to host the next America's Cup, adding
its name to the other cities that have made entreaties
to the Alinghi syndicate.
Douarnenez lies in the Baie de Douarnenez in north-western
France to the south of Brest. The Bay faces directly
westwards into the Atlantic from the west coast of
Brittany. |
