Sweden's

Light five knot winds could easily have
made the last day of the Swedish Match Tour’s
Danish Open about as interesting as watching
paint dry.
Nonetheless, the more 1,000 spectators packed
onto the mole off Skovshoved Havn were treated
to a day of lively and highly tactical match
racing between some of the top names in the
business... with the ultimate result being a
decisive win for Sweden’s Magnus Holmberg over
this former Victory Challenge teammate, Jesper
Bank of Denmark.
This is Holmberg’s third straight Danish Open
win (he didn’t complete last year due to commitments
to the Victory Challenge) and the second consecutive
time he has ended up in the finals facing Jesper
Bank. Additionally, the win here this week marks
Holmberg’s sixth overall on the Swedish Match
Tour, moving him two ahead of Team New Zealand’s
Dean Barker and Denmark’s Jesper Radich, with
four wins apiece.
The morning saw the final rounds of the semi
finals competed. Peter Gilmour took the first
race off Jesper Bank, but Bank won the next
race to go 3-1 up and gain the spot in the final.
In the other semi final series Magnus Holmberg
saw off reigning Swedish Match Tour champion
Jesper Radich in both races to take his semi-final
series 3-1 too. There was some controversy in
the final race of this series as the sea breeze
was attempting to overcome the gradient breeze
causing four massive wind shifts.
Today’s Results

Hot
fun under the Danish Sun (08/17/03)

After yesterday’s 30 knot battering, summer
holiday conditions returned today to Skovshoved
Havn, the northern suburb of Copenhagen, where
the Danish Open, the first event of Swedish
Match Tour 2003/2004 is in full swing.
With the lightening of the conditions to 16-18
knots this morning, the racing also improved
with crews spending less time trying to prevent
their boats from wiping out and more time on
tactics.
In a long day out on the water, the remaining
matches of the round robins series were completed
by lunchtime. Topping the scoreboard on nine
points apiece were Australian America’s Cup
veteran Peter Gilmour and former Victory Challenge
afterguard Magnus Holmberg of Sweden. Due to
his beating Gilmour in the round robins it was
Holmberg who landed the top spot going into
the semi-finals.
Local hero and double Olympic medallist Jesper
Bank also squeezed through into the top four
after winning one of the most aggressive matches
of the day from Frenchman Luc Pillot.
In a competitive regatta such as this there
must be losers as well as winners and among
the surprises were former Mascalzone Latino
helm Paolo Cian who ended the round robins last
and Poland’s Karol Jablonski who finished eighth.
The Danish Open has shown no end to the downturn
in Jes Gram Hansen’s performance, despite racing
on home waters. The Dane looked set to win Swedish
Match Tour 2002/2003 earlier this year, but
ended the round robins today in 10th place.
With the round robins out of the way, the first
half of the semi-finals and the petit-semis
to determine positions five to eight, were held
in the afternoon by which time the wind had
dropped to a very shiftly 4-10 knots still out
of the west.
Remarkably with two of the five semi-final races
now complete the underdogs are in a strong position.
Semi-finals
Magnus Holmberg vs Jesper Radich: 1-1
Peter Gilmour vs Jesper Bank: 0-2
Petit-semi finals
Karol Jablonski vs Andy Beadsworth: 2-0
Kelvin Harrap vs Luc Pillot: races to be sailed

combat in 38 knots in Denmark (08/16/03)

Sweden’s Magnus Holmberg of Team Stora
Enso and Australia’s Peter Gilmour of Team Pizza
La lapped up the barnstorming breezes blustering
through Copenhagen and share the leaderboard
with 7 wins and 1 loss, on the second day of
the Danish Open, the openening round of the
Swedish Match Tour 2003/04.
Even the 38-knot gusts could not unsettle these
two teams who were simply better than the other
10 international teams at wrestling the DS37
yachts around the course.
Holmberg was nevertheless disappointed not to
be able to retain the clean sheet that he carried
through from day one. While he prevailed over
two Danish teams skippered by Jesper Radich
and Lars Nordbjaerg, he admitted to making a
mess of his match against the Netherlands' Roy
Heiner.
With the wind frequently gusting to over 30
knots, the organizers decided to put in one
reef on the mainsail. Many sailors suffered
some spectacular broaches and wipe-outs, much
to the entertainment of the crowds onshore.
