Day
5 - Ed
Baird is the new World Champion (08/30/03)
(source

|
With his crew composed by Thomas Burnham,
John Ziskind and Andy Horton, Baird defeated
by 3-1 Australian skipper James Spithill and
won today the ISAF Match Racing World Championship.
The finals were sailed this afternoon with the
typical southerly breeze of lake Garda known
as “ora”, blowing at 15-20 knots.
Spithill won the first race, overtaking Baird
in the last downwind run. In the second match
Baird and Spithill arrived at the first windward
mark together, but Baird was able to round ahead
and keep the lead throughout the race.
In match three the umpires inflicted a penalty
with red flag to Spithill, who therefore had
to complete the turn immediately. Baird thus
gained his second win.
In the fourth and crucial match, it was Baird’s
turn to get a penalty in the pre-start. However,
the American skipper was able to take the lead
and slowly extend it throughout the race. Right
on the finish, Baird completed the penalty turn
and won his third race by a fraction, ahead
of James Spithill.
Earlier in the day, James Spithill was able
to score 3 consecutive wins against French skipper
Mathieu Richard, while American Ed Baird was
able to beat 3-2 the defending world champion
from Poland, Karol Jablonski.
The petit final was won by Karol Jablonski,
who defeated 2-1 French skipper Mathieu Richard.

Day

set up in Italy (08/29/03)

A slow day, today, for the 12 skippers
competing in the ISAF Match Racing World Championship.
Due to the unstable weather conditions (lack
of wind early in the afternoon, strong northerly
wind arriving later in the day), the Race Committee
was unable to complete round robin two.
The 4 semifinalists were therefore selected
using a point system that compares the results
of round robin one and two. In the matches where
the skippers met each other, the points are
split in half, while in the matches where they
met each other once, the points are kept intact.
The 4 skippers out of the competing 12 who qualify
for the semifinals are :
1. Ed Baird, USA (Andy Horton, Tom Burnham,
John Ziskind) – 8,5 pts
2. James Spithill, AUS (Ben Durham, Joe Newton,
Andy Fethers) – 8 pts
3. Mathieu Richard, FRA (Greg Evrard, Olivier
Herledant, Yannick Simon) – 8 pts
4. Karol Jablonski, POL (Grzegorz Baranowski,
Piotr Przybylski, Jacek Wysocki) – 7 pts

The four skippers currently best placed are
James Spithill and Mathieu Richard (with 13
