The

Staging a massive comeback from deep in
the standings, New Zealander Russell Coutts,
the record-setting America’s Cup skipper, won
the third annual Toscana Elba Cup – Trofeo Locman.
The skipper of America’s Cup champion Alinghi
Team, defeated Australian Peter Gilmour 2-1
to claim the fifth event on the 2003-’04 Swedish
Match Tour.
At the end of racing on Thursday, May 6, Coutts
was last in the field of 12 crews with a 1-5
record. After sailing 22 races, the maximum
number possible, he has become the champion
and won €35,000.
Although Gilmour lost, he still won €25,000
for second place and has the Swedish Match Tour
Championship Leaderboard in a stranglehold.
He added 20 points to his scoreline. With a
total of 97 points, he is 48 points ahead of
second-placed Magnus Holmberg with three events
remaining.
By winning, Coutts added 25 points to his total
and leaped to fifth on the leaderboard from
a tie for 13th.
The conditions for the final were as glorious
as yesterday, when the quarterfinal and semifinal
rounds were raced. The winds were out of the
east/southeast between 8 and 12 knots.
Earlier in the day, Coutts defeated New Zealander
Gavin Brady of the Oracle BMW Racing Team, 3-2,
in the semifinal. Brady led Coutts 2-1 coming
into today after yesterday’s racing, but Coutts
won today’s two matches to advance.
The Oracle BMW Racing team gained redemption
in the Petit Final when they defeated Poland’s
Karol Jablonski and the Toscana Challenge team
2-0.
The next event on the Swedish Match Tour is
the ACI HT Mobile Cup, May 24-29, in Split,
Croatia.

Swedish Match Tour Championship leader
Peter Gilmour has advanced to the finals of
the Toscana Elba Cup – Trofeo Locman. All’s
that’s left to decide is who will be his opponent
in tomorrow’s best-of-five final.
Gilmour arrived in the final by defeating Ed
Baird 2-1 in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal,
the australian skipper deposed of Karol Jablonski
(3-1) who got to the semifinal by beating Jesper
Radich 2-1 in the quarterfinal.
In the other semifinals, Gavin Brady, the helmsman
for America’s Cup Challenger of Record Oracle
BMW Racing, leads Russell Coutts, the skipper
of America’s Cup defending champion Alinghi
Team, 2-1 in their semifinal match that was
suspended late this evening when the winds dropped
to 5 knots and the sun waned.
Brady arrived in the semifinal by beating Magnus
Holmberg 2-0 in the quarterfinal. He was the
only skipper to sweep his opponent in the round.
Coutts got the semis by beating Bertrand Pacé
2-1, in a battle of former Team New Zealand
sailors. Coutts won the America’s Cup twice
for Team New Zealand as skipper (1995 and 2000),
while Pacé was the tune-up helmsman for the
unsuccessful defense in 2003.
The Brady-Coutts semifinal is scheduled to be
concluded tomorrow morning, with the final starting
shortly afterward.

Brady
wins round robin at Toscana Elba Cup (05/07/04)
(source
: Swedish
Match Tour) |
The top of the leaderboard at the Toscana
Elba Cup – Trofeo Locman underwent some shuffling
today in what proved to be a scrappy day for
the event of the Swedish Match Tour.
In the longest day of the regatta, a total of
10 flights (30 matches) were completed today
in an aggressive effort to finish the 22-flight
round-robin, which was achieved at 8:00 p.m.
The quarterfinalists have been determined and
the event is set to advance to its next stage.
Gavin Brady won the round robin with a 10-1
record. Brady’s lone loss to Swedish Match Tour
rookie Michael Dunstan showed that his veteran
crew still has some rough edges to smooth out.
Peter Gilmour quietly climbed up the rankings
to place second in the round robin. Gilmour,
the overall leader of the Swedish Match Tour
Championship Leaderboard with 77 points, and
his crew won six straight races to close with
a 9-2 record.
Karol Jablonski tumbled from the top spot he
has held since Day 1 after posting a 1-3 record
on the day. He finished the round robin third
with an 8-3 mark.
With the round robin now complete, the attention
turns to the next rounds of the regatta. The
schedule calls for quarterfinal, semifinal and
final rounds. Each round was a scheduled best-of-five
series at the beginning of the regatta, when
time was a luxury.
Now, they’ve been reduced to best-of-three series,
beginning tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. The
pairings will be determined at the skippers’
morning briefing.

Jablonski
and Brady maintain perfect marks (05/06/04)
(source
: Swedish
Match Tour) |
Karol Jablonski and Gavin Brady remained
the pacesetters after Day 3 at the Toscana Elba
Cup – Trofeo Locman.
Jablonski, representing the Toscana Challenge
for the America’s Cup, and Brady, the helmsman
for Oracle BMW Racing, both won all of their
matches today at the Swedish Match Tour event
and are the only remaining undefeated skippers.
Jablonski continued his fine sailing by winning
all three of his matches. He defeated Magnus
Holmberg, Russell Coutts and Ed Baird. Brady
also won all four of his matches today, beating
Baird, Jesper Radich, Coutts and Holmberg.
The third day was supposed to be worse than
the first two days but the winds were light
and shifty early in the day, between 6 and 8
knots from the south/southeast. By mid-afternoon
a strong westerly filled and the race committee
completed six flights, 19 matches (including
a re-sailed match) overall.
The race committee, however, was forced to move
the racecourse all over the area of Porto Azzurro.
The light southerly winds early in the day forced
the racecourse outside of the bay. When the
westerlies filled they were able to move the
course inside the bay, parallel to the shorelines.
Then the final flight of the day was sailed
out of the bay.
Among the highlights in the first three flights
of the day involved Peter Gilmour’s Pizza-La
Sailing Team, which won three of four matches.
They improved their record to 4-2 and hold third
place in the standings.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is Coutts, who
is in 12th place with a 1-5 mark. His one victory
came against Baird. Coutts has been off the
Tour for a while and says he is here just to
have fun. But for a three-time America’s Cup
champion, losing is no fun.
Racing is scheduled to continue tomorrow.
