Lake Garda offered one of its spectacular days of strong southerly breeze up 20-25 knots and sunshine to the ten crews competing in the Garda Trentino Open Match Race.

With the local breeze "Ora" settling in at around 10am, the Race Committee was able to complete round robin one and start round robin two. The competitors, who left the dock at 10am, returned to shore after 7pm.

Jesper Radich had a very good day, scoring 8 wins and suffering only 1 loss to Paolo Cian. Current match racing world champion Ed Baird, who climbed the rankings from third to second position with yesterday’s ISAF release, scored 7 wins and lost only 1 match to Radich.

In the overall results, Baird and Radich are leading, both with 11 wins and only 2 losses. Richard follows with 10 wins and 3 losses.

At the end of the second round robin, only the top four skippers will proceed to the semifinals. They will race against each other in a knock out series, first to score three points. Racing will resume tomorrow morning through Saturday.

The Garda Trentino grade 1 Open Match Race, organised by the Fraglia Vela Riva in conjunction with the International Sailing Federation (ISAF), started today in the beautiful setting of Lake Garda.

The ten competing skippers left the dock early this morning to make the most of the northerly breeze locally known as "Peler". The Race Committee was able to complete 6 flights of round robin one (except for flight 2 where matches 3 and 4 were abandoned).

Around 10.30 am the wind dropped and the competitors waited on the race course until midday when the southerly breeze "Ora" kicked in. However, they had to tackle very fluky and unstable wind conditions due to the approaching clouds.

The results of some matches were unsure right until the very end, due to the frequent and sudden changes in wind strength and direction.

Jesper Radich was disqualified from match 3 of flight 3 for using an illegal rig on the jib sheet. Current match racing world champion Ed Baird is leading the fleet with 4 wins and one loss.
