Coutts claims second Swedish Match Cup (07/11/03)
 (source : Swedish Match Tour)
Russell Coutts, the all-time America’s Cup-winning skipper from New Zealand, doesn’t race the Swedish Match Tour on a regular basis, but he’s a force to be reckoned with when he shows up.

Coutts won his second Tour event of the year when he claimed the Swedish Match Cup championship with a 3-1 victory over Australian Peter Gilmour and the Pizza-La Sailing Team.

It was Coutts’ second victory at the Swedish Match Cup (having previously won in 2001), and his fourth in eight events on the Tour over the past five years. Two months ago Coutts won the Tour championship in Porto Azzurro, Italy, where he also defeated Gilmour and the Pizza-La crew, 2-1.

Coutts, sailing with Tour regular Jes Gram-Hansen of Denmark and his countrymen Michael Arnhild, Christian Kamp and Rasmus Kostner, split the first two races of the final against the Pizza-La team, and then won two straight to claim the championship.

In the Petit Final Magnus Holmberg defeated Chris Law, 2-0, to finish third while Law placed fourth in his defense of the title. Holmberg won the first match outright, then used a penalty against Law to win the second match, which was not without drama.

Law became the second skipper to fall overboard at the Swedish Match Cup when he went for a swim after entering the pre-start box (earlier in the week Coutts hit Peter Holmberg so hard that Holmberg wound overboard).

While Holmberg won’t compete at the first Tour event of the 2004-’05 season, the Portugal Match Cup in Cascais (July 26-30), Coutts will. And he’ll have the Danes crewing for him again.

Four embroiled in semis at SM Cup (07/10/03)
 (source : Swedish Match Tour)
The Swedish Match Cup rolled to the mid-point of the semifinals today for four crews, while four others were left wondering what could’ve been after the quarterfinal round at the Swedish Match Tour’s final event of the 2003-’04 season.

The semis were suspended this afternoon with Peter Gilmour’s (AUS) Pizza-La Sailing Team leading Chris Law’s (GBR) crew, The Outlaws, 2-0 in one match. In the other semifinal match Magnus Holmberg’s (SWE) SeaLife Rangers crew is tied with Russell Coutts’ (NZL) crew of Danish sailors 1-1. The semifinal matches are best-of-five series, or first to 3 points.

This morning’s quarterfinal round brought an abrupt end to the title aspirations to the crews led by skippers Ed Baird (USA), Jesper Bank (DEN), Karol Jablonski (POL) and Lars Nordbjerg (DEN). Baird lost to Holmberg, 2-1, while Bank, Jablonski and Nordbjerg lost 2-0 to Coutts, Gilmour and Law, respectively.

Quaterfinalists set at Swedish Match Cup (07/09/04)

Two escape acts that would make Houdini proud were the feature of the day at the Swedish Match Cup, the final event of the 2003-’04 Swedish Match Tour.

Peter Gilmour’s (AUS) Pizza-La Sailing Team and Jesper Bank’s (DEN) crew advanced to the quarterfinal round after narrowly averting defeat in the Stage 2 knockout series held today.

Russell Coutts (NZL), Magnus Holmberg (SWE), Chris Law (GBR) and Lars Nordbjerg (DEN) also advanced to the quarterfinal round, scheduled for tomorrow. Karol Jablonski (POL) and Ed Baird (USA) advanced straight to the quarterfinals after winning the Group A and B round robins, respectively.

“If you can get to the quarterfinals here, there are all good teams,” said Baird, who won the Group B round robin this morning with a 7-0 mark. “If the conditions suit your strong points you’re going to do well. But you have to go with whatever comes.”

Coutts dunks Holmberg at Swedish Match Cup (07/08/04)
 (source : Swedish Match Tour)

On a day when Russell Coutts couldn’t keep from plowing into Peter Holmberg, American Ed Baird rolled to a 6-0 record to ensure himself a spot in Saturday’s quarterfinals of the Swedish Match Cup.

With racing in Group B suspended late this afternoon due to lack of wind, Baird, the reigning match-racing world champion, rolled to a 6-0 record in a tough group looking completely at ease in the light winds.

Despite having one more flight to sail before Group B completes its initial round robin, Baird can’t be beat. Below him the standings are a jumbled mess as the competitors fought each other and light winds.

Coutts (NZL) is second with 3.5 points on a 4-1 record and Björn Hansen (SWE) is third at 3-2. Three skippers are tied at 2-3, including Peter Gilmour (AUS), Holmberg (USVI) and Luc Pillot (FRA). Lars Nordbjerg (DEN) is seventh at 1-4, while Staffan Lindberg (FIN) is eighth at 1-5.

The highlight match of the day pitted Coutts against Holmberg. Coutts wound up putting Holmberg in the drink when he hit the past Swedish Match Tour champion during an incident at the windward mark of their Flight 2 match.
