James Spithill of Luna Rossa defeated
by 3-1 Roy Heiner and joined sailing legends
Peter and Magnus Holmberg as a two time winner
in the history of the Roberto Trombini Challenge
Trophy.
Heiner won the first race and Spithill the
second one. In the third match, it was Spithills
turn to get a penalty in the pre-start. However,
the Australian skipper was able to take the
lead and slowly extend it throughout the race.
In the fourth and crucial match, Spithill took
command, winning the start, and sailed a clean,
controlled race.
Earlier in the day, James Spithill was able
to beat 3-1 the danish Lars Norbjaerg who was
defeated by Ian Williams in the petit final
two races to one.

Second-last day of the match races in
Marina di Ravenna and, after winds of 50 knots
(Bora) during the night, the wind conditions
returned favourable, in the morning down to
12-15 knots and in the afternoon down to 6-8
knots.
The quarter-finals have been particularly
hard fought: the even balance of the teams made
for never ending excitements: 3 duels in the
quarter-finals ended only at the 5th match,
the deciding game at 2-2 points.

Conditions for Day 2 of Roberto Trombini
Challenge Trophy were ideal and a total of six
flights were completed today to finish the 14-flight
round-robin.
The eight quarterfinalists have been determined
with Luna Rossa's James Spithill won the RR
with a 11-0 record and the event is set to advance
to its next stage.

2002 winner James Spithill recorded six
wins on the opening day of the X Roberto Trombini
Challenge Trophy Match Race to take the early
lead in round robin racing.
Also in the limelight Englishman Ian Williams,
and the young Australian Micheal Dunstan, Dane
Lars Nordbjerg and also the 20 year old Russian
Eugeny Neugodnikov gave some surprising performances
on this first day of the tenth edition of the
Trombini Trophy.
Today saw the debut to Grade 1 ISAF of nineteen
years old Dane Peter Wibroe who was called in
at the last minute to substitute his fellow
countryman the great Jes Gram-Hansen.
Perfect weather and wind conditions prevailed
(sunny, flat water and 10-14 knots of easterly
breeze) and the race committee was able to complete
40 matches for the first 8 flights in in Marina
di Ravenna.

The
Trombini Challenge starts in Italy (06/29/03)

This year is the tenth edition of the
Roberto Trombini Challenge Trophy at Marina
di Ravenna, from 30th June to 4th July 2004.
The decennial edition of the Trombini Challenge
Trophy promises to be a big success thanks to
the high level of organization by Progetto Vela
in collaboration with Circolo Velico Ravennate
and International Yacht Club Marinara and thanks
to the support of the many sponsors united in
remembrance of Roberto Trombini, well known
yachtsman from Ravenna.
The participation of 12 world level skippers
and some big names from the Americas
Cup, the possibility to follow the races from
the grandstand on the pier at the port of
Marina di Ravenna, the hospitality village
and many other attractions make the 10th Roberto
Trombini Challenge Trophy yet again another
extraordinary occasion not to be missed by
all match race enthusiasts.
The programme of Round Robins will be posted
after the pairing at the skippers meeting.
Each crew will challenge all the others twice
in the Round Robins. The teams will be classified
at the end of the series of flights.
The first 8 will go forward to the quarter
finals , the best 4 will go on to the semi-finals
and so on until the finals.
