Second Round Robin under way in Russia (07/23/04)
 (source : ISAF)
Day 4 of the ISAF Match Racing World Championship in Ekaterinburg, RUS on Thursday brought similar conditions to Wednesday. The sky was clear and temperatures were into the high 20’s.

The breeze started out from the North for the first two flights, which meant that the race course could be set parallel to the shore giving the tourists on the beach a good view of the racing; though one swimmer had a bit of a surprise when Ian WILLIAMS (GBR) steered his Ricochet 750 between her and the beach. ”The pressure on the left was much better and getting to the shore was imperative”.

Right at the end of flight two when Ed BAIRD (USA) and Eugeny NEUGODNIKOV (RUS) were within touching distance of the finish line the wind went hard right, collapsing the spinnakers and leaving the crews scrambling for their jibs. Baird held on to win by less than a boat length.

The wind settled (well, loosely settled) out of the east at 6-10 knots but still threw a few curve balls in to keep the PRO on his toes with the occasional 60 degree lefty. Ben (the PRO) did a great job staying on top of the shifts and kept the mark boat crew busy dragging the marks around to keep the beats true.

At 9pm time was called after the completion of flight 10, leaving 7 flights for Friday to finish the second round robin. On Tuesday the wind came in at 7pm and some of the sailors asked ”Why are we not racing, there is excellent wind?” Nobody is likely to ask that question again.

The first Round Robin completed in Russia (07/22/04)
 (source : ISAF)
After two days of frustrating conditions a light but shifty wind filled in for day 3 yesterday. Racing got under way at 10.30 with a fickle easterly breeze blowing at 6 knots.

The breeze stayed all day today and varied in strength from 6-10 knots with 45 degree shifts rolling through the course. The race committee did an amazing job picking which marks to send the matches to with only 2 matches out of 42 having to be abandoned for a re-sail.

The slick work on the changeover helped complete 11 flights to finish the first round robin. It was a very tired group of sailors, umpires and race committee that arrived back at the dock at 20.45.

The big question is which way next. With a forecast for Thursday exactly the same as the preceding two days, Thursday could bring the lions share of the second round completed or a stalling in the proceedings which could lead to breaking for semi-finals. Lets hope for the wind gods to smile.

Difficult start for Worlds best in Russia (07/21/04)
 (source : ISAF)
Started yesterday on the Verkh-Neyvinskiy pond near Ekaterinberg in Russia, the 12 skippers have had a tough start to their individual bids for the World Championship.
The first day yesterday was marred by extremely light winds and 35C heat and until 5.00pm not a single flight had been sailed. In the evening however, two flights were sailed, still leaving much to catch up on today.

The weather situation was much improved today but still changeable. Flights started in an early afternoon fresh breeze that brought with it thunderstorms and hard rain before the wind eventually dropped off this evening.

So far, six full flights have been sailed and the current joint leadership is held between the Current number 1 on the ISAF World Match Race Rankings, Karol JABLONSKI (POL) and the current ISAF World Match Race Champion, Ed BAIRD (USA).
