Bertrand Pacé won the ACI Cup (05/29/03)
 (source : Swedish Match Tour)

Bertrand Pacé and his Team France crew - consisted of Benoit Briand (headsails), Tanguy Carriou (mainsail), Fabrice Levet (tactics and pit) and Romain Troublé (bow) – have won the 18th annual ACI HTmobile Cup, an event of the Swedish Match Tour.

Pacé defeated Peter Gilmour’s Pizza-La Sailing Team 3-0 in the final that was plagued by light and extremely shifty winds.

Pacé won the first flight outright. In the second flight he came from behind when the wind shifted 180 degrees during the race.

Gilmour got a penalty on Pacé in the third flight pre-start, but the Frenchman was able to extend far enough ahead in the light conditions to perform his penalty turn at the finish line and claim the championship while Gilmour was still some eight lengths behind.

Gilmour’s second place finish was enough to clinch the Swedish Match Tour Championship for 2003-’04. Gilmour and his Pizza-La crew – Rod Dawson (mainsail), Mike Mottl (headsails), Kazuhiko Sofuku (bow) and Yasuhiro Yaji (pit) – have totaled 117 of a possible 150 points.

In an amazing display of consistency, they have placed in the top four at all six Swedish Match Tour events.

Gilmour has won two events, but he has placed second in the last two events. He lost to Russell Coutts at the Toscana Elba Cup two weeks ago. And he placed fourth at the Congressional Cup in April, after winning the round robin.

In the petit final, Sweden’s Magnus Holmberg and the SeaLife Rangers crew defeated Jes Gram-Hansen’s Team Denmark 2-0.

Pacé to meet Gilmour in ACI Cup (05/28/03)
 (source : Swedish Match Tour)

Bertrand Pacé and Team France will meet Peter Gilmour and the Pizza-La Sailing Team tomorrow in the finals of the ACI HTmobile Cup, the sixth event on the Swedish Match Tour 2003-’04.

Pacé defeated Team Denmark’s Jes Gram-Hansen 3-0 in one semifinal match, while Gilmour beat Sweden’s Magnus Holmberg and the SeaLife Rangers crew, 3-1, in the other semifinal contest.

"
Tomorrow is sure to be exciting," said Pacé in preview of the final. "Gilmour is very tough. I think there’ll be a lot of Y flags flying."

Gilmour, the overall leader of the Swedish Match Tour Championship Leaderboard, is a four-time champion of the ACI Cup, having won in 1993, ’94, ’95 and ’97.

Pacé, winner of the inaugural Swedish Match Tour in 2000, has never won the event.

"
Bertrand hasn’t been doing a lot of match-racing this year," Gilmour said. "He’s the up and coming new boy while we’re the old sages."

Today’s events at the 18th annual ACI Cup were slow to start. A third consecutive windless morning meant the race committee issued another shoreside postponement.

Today, however, the lack of wind meant the cancellation of the final seven flights of the round robin, and the scores for Flights 1-4 and 12-15 had to be recalculated. But that had little consequence on the four teams that advanced to the semifinals.

Another perfect day for Bertrand Pacé (05/27/04)
 (source : Swedish Match Tour)
Frenchman Bertrand Pacé remains the overall leader at the ACI HTmobile Cup, an event of the Swedish Match Tour, but three other crews are hot on his transom, just one victory behind.

Pacé won the only match he sailed today to move to 11-2 overall. But the crews led by skippers Jes Gram-Hansen (DEN), Magnus Holmberg (SWE) and Peter Gilmour (AUS) all trail by one victory. And Gavin Brady (NZL) is just two wins in arrears.

With two victories today, Gram-Hansen moved into second overall. His 10-3 record is one loss better than Holmberg’s and Gilmour’s 10-4 marks. Gram-Hansen had his second round bye in Flight 12, while Holmberg and Gilmour haven’t had theirs yet.

Gram-Hansen, who has two fifths and an eighth in the last three years of this event, opened this year’s account with two losses, but since has gone 10-1. Today he defeated Kelvin Harrap and Mattias Rahm in two wire-to-wire wins.

Light winds hampered the efficient race committee work that has been a staple of the first two days of the 18th annual regatta. The winds were from the west/southwest, and blowing 3 to 6 knots.

The race committee issued a shoreside postponement this morning instead of the scheduled 10:50 a.m. warning signal. The postponement lasted until 2:15 p.m., when they finally took to the water and the first attention signal was made at 2:45 p.m.
