Emirates Team New Zealand helmsman Dean Barker
won the New Zealand Match Racing Championships over
the weekend, beating America’s Cup sailors from
BMW Oracle Racing and K-Challenge among others.
Barker needed all five races of the final to dispatch
BMW Oracle Racing skipper Chris Dickson. After losing
the first race, Barker won the next two. Dickson
forced the fifth and deciding race with some smart
sailing, forcing a penalty on the Emirates squad
and patiently avoiding the trap set by Barker as
he tried to lure Dickson into a penalty of his own
during a hard-fought fourth race.
In the fifth and deciding contest, Barker’s team
managed to squeeze inside the first mark ahead of
Dickson, and held a slender lead to the finish,
crossing the line 12-seconds up.
Earlier, Dickson had defeated Cameron Appleton,
of K-Challenge 2-0 in the best-of-three semi final
to advance to the final, while Barker squeaked past
Simon Minoprio 2-1.
The Emirates Team New Zealand helmsman was the best
sailor in the round robin to open the regatta, posting
14 wins against no losses.
