ACM unveiled the pairings lists (15/06/05)
(source : America's Cup)

The 2005 Valencia Louis Vuitton Acts 4 & 5 start with the first warning gun at 14:00 this afternoon and it's fair to say that today marks an important moment in the 32nd America's Cup.

For the first time all 12 of the competing teams are racing, and this year it counts. The new scoring system that assigns bonus points to the challengers means everyone will be racing hard to earn every last advantage they can come 2007.

The racing over the next 10 days also takes place at the same time of year as the America's Cup Match in 2007 - the weather conditions should be fantastic with moderate to strong sea breezes driven by the heat of the warm Spanish afternoons. In addition, the Port America's Cup is now filled with team bases and Superyachts.

The atmosphere we normally associate with the America's Cup Match is building, two full years before the event. So come down to the America's Cup Park, or go out on the water to watch the racing, and enjoy the spectacle of one of the most exciting and impressive events in the world.

"I think it is great for the sport", said Alinghi's Peter Holmberg. "This is the first time we have done this format for the Cup. For us at Team Alinghi we see this as an opportunity as I'm sure it is for these teams as well to square up against us".

"I think it is good for both parties", he added. "We at Alinghi are really happy. We get to measure our progress and keep our team sharp. And I'm sure these other teams will gain something from it, but that's what sailing's all about."

The pairings list was also published on Wednesday morning, and offers an intriguing all-Italian match-up in the first Flight, when the Luna Rossa Challenge meets Mascalzone Latino - Team Capitalia.
