Following on from Shenzhen, China
Team arrived in Hong Kong Friday for a stop-over
at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.
Out of a total of fifteen Chinese sailors who participated
in the first part of the Sailing Camp, nine were
chosen to take part in the regattas on the two 76-foot
Maxi Yachts which belong to Franck Pong, an important
figure in the sailing world in Hong Kong.
Franck Pong's crew boarded the Jelik, a magnificent
white Maxi yacht while China Team and the recent
recruits were defeated by Borakay, the second maxi
yacht with attractive metal grey graphics.
Franck Pong and Pierre Mas were at the helms. China
Team won finally the race, but the most important
thing for Pierre Mas is the taking part in this
event.
"We were very lucky to be able to train on this
huge boat", he said. "After spending the week in
Shenzhen, we needed to see how the sailors we chose
would work out on a boat which is more or less similar
in size to a Class America".
"On this kind of yacht, everyone has a very precise
role to play, and a specific job to do. It is totally
different from a dinghy or even the smaller match
racing boats. We can now begin to pare down our
selection for the America's Cup regatta in Valence
in May and June."
Next step in the beginning of April when China Team
will put to sea the refurbished CHN 79 and present
its crew for the upcoming LV Acts.
