"Veles e Vents", the well named building (28/04/06)

Some meters far away from the Dàrsena, one of the main event in May should be the opening of the new Foredeck Club.

After months of intensive effort, the enterprises in charge of undertaking the required civil works (Necso, RoverAlcisa and Lic) should deliver the building in time in time for the Valencia Louis Vuitton Acts 10 & 11 beginning May 11.

"This is a project out of all normal time realities", underlined the Brits David Chipperfield, one of the two architects on the project (whith Spanish architect Fermín Vázquez). "The fact that it looks like it will be finished in time is going to be one of the wonders of the world".

"We've had to make big decisions and very clear decisions on the run. In some ways the time factor became inherent in the building. It's not a fussy building, but rather a big idea. We're doing a project in one year that should take at least two years".

The 10,000m² 4-floor pavilion will host the Foredeck Club hospitality area, along with a public restaurant and café, Louis Vuitton and America's Cup stores, and will be the centrepiece of the America's Cup Park.

Located at the edge of the Port America's Cup, alongside the new canal leading to the northern race course, the Chipperfield's building is in a prime position with views over both the race course area and the Port itself.

"I think the building is a setting to enjoy the America's Cup", said David Chipperfield. "We want the building to give a strong impression but the impression is meant to be about the event and the boats". "I think the building helps push the sea back to you. It puts you in a wonderful place. I think that's what the building is meant to be - the plaza and the building together".

Justifiably proud of the performance that has made this building possible, the consortium Valencia 2007 (in full agreement with ACM) intends now to christen it "Edificio Veles e Vents".

A name chosen by reference to "Veles e vents han mos desigs complir" (Sails and winds shall my desires achieve), a poem written in 1397 by Ausiàs March, one of the first poet to use the Valencian language.
