The third day of Louis Vuitton
Act 13 fleet racing was called off Thursday because
of poor weather.
At 16:20, the Race Committee postponed racing for
the day, after the fleet was held at sea on a cold,
wet spring day.
When the 12 Cup teams left Port America’s Cup for
racing, they were faced with a cold, light Northerly
breeze and a heavy swell. Rain squalls soon blew
down the race area and at the scheduled start time
of 14:05, racing was postponed.
The Race Committee kept the boats at sea from nearly
two and a half hours, but it was in vain; the weather
never improved and the wind never consistently held
over 5 knots.
Only three of the seven races have been sailed so
far, with Alinghi leading the overall standings
with Team New Zealand and Oracle second equal.
"Tomorrow looks like it could be breezy, north-easterly
breeze 16 to 18 knots and it looks like there could
be some quite big waves coming", said Jack
Katzfey, Alinghi weather team, "Right now it
looks like it's going to be sailable unless the
waves get too big."
"Theoretically, tomorrow, we will see a more
typical situation for Valencia", added Areva
Challenge's meteorologist Bernard Simon, Meteorologist.
"We will be in the center of a ‘barometric
low’, which is also a complex system with clouds
which can interact in a random pattern. These situations
are very difficult to apprehend. It is lately, a
very random field!".
If the weather conditions remain poor, organizers
are facing their first major headache.
The teams may well have to race on Saturday's reserve
day so the points from Act 13 can be counted.
At least four races are needed to make a regatta
under international rules.
