Four-time America's Cup-winning
crew member Simon Daubney quit Alinghi Thursday
after failed a doping test in June.
Simon Daubney, who helped the Swiss syndicate win
its second straight America's Cup trophy in July,
faces an automatic two-year ban after testing positive
for a recreational drug on June 23, America's Cup
Management chief executive Michel Hodara said.
The test was taken on the opening day of this year's
competition, which Alinghi eventually won 5-2 over
Emirates Team New Zealand in Valencia, Spain.
Daubney, who also won titles in 1995 and 2000 with
Team New Zealand, said he was told of the positive
result on July 13, 10 days after Alinghi's win.
The 48-year-old New Zealander denied knowingly taking
a banned substance.
"However, until this matter is completely resolved,
I have resigned from Alinghi so that they can go
about their business without distraction," Daubney
said in a statement.
The case will next go before the international sailing
federation, said Hodara, who added that Daubney's
positive result was the only one of the competition.
Daubney, who said he wants to return to sailing,
added that he went before an America's Cup jury
to state his case.
"The jury recognized that he wasn't at fault," Hodara
said. "We won't know the end result until the jury
renders its verdict and we get the full written
decision."
