Real Club Náutico de Valencia |
After
the NY Supreme Court renders its decision,
Desafío Español have to choose a new yacht
club.
Considering the fact that the court ruled
the Club Nautico Espanol de Vela (CNEV), a
Spanish yacht club formed two weeks before
Bertarelli's Alinghi won the Cup on July 3,
was ineligible, it should rapidly vanish.
The CNEV death certificate may be putting
Spanish Yacht clubs in a situation that would
stir up widespread and fervent competition
not seen since a long time.
At least two clubs, the Club Náutico de Xàbia
and the Real Club Náutico de Canet D’en Berenguer,
have already expressed interest to Desafío
Español.
Nertheless, this competition could come to
a sudden end as the Real
Club Náutico de Valencia (RCNV), considered
by many to be the natural candidate, could
steal the show.
The club was founded in 1903 and it has developed
into one of the most important Clubs in Europe.
It has some of the most modern and complete
nautical installations of the Region of Valencia
and a large cruiser fleet is moored at its
pontoons.
Contrary to the CNEV, the Valencian sailing
club has clearly shown its ability, both on
a national and international scale, to organise
regattas of a very high level, such as Trofeo
S.M. La Reina (held 7 times) or Gran Trofeo
Valencia (held 44 times).
Alone or together
with the Monte Real Club de Yates (Bayona,
Galicia), it has launched three previous America's
Cup campaign in 1992, 1995 and 2000.
According to the Spanish newspaper Las Provincias,
the first contacts between Desafío Español
and the RCNV concerning a possible future
cooperation took place recently.
"That would be the more satisfactory
and logical option", said a Desafío spokesman,
forgetting that they were not able to agree
during the last America's Cup.
