Team Germany's French navigator
Philippe Mourniac provided his analysis of the Team
chances.
While every challenging team in the Louis Vuitton
Cup seems filled with confidence of shining during
the Louis Vuitton Cup, Team Germany expressed a
singular realism.
"If we want to be objective, the right place
for the German boat is not in semifinals",
Philippe Mourniac said. "In fact, we are going
to be in the middle of the field, considering that
the game remains open between the first and the
second of this middlefield and those which, on the
contrary, will be in the bottom".
But, underdogs have already had a successful run
during the past editions, so some surprises could
be forthcoming.
"The first question that anyone asks is to
know if one of the 'big three' could not be unpleasantly
surprised", he added. "As the Spaniards
seem to have slight advantage, our goal is to occupy
the place 4, 5 or 6. What should be very good".
"We had some concerns at the beginning",
he said about the first steps of GER 89. "We
are suffering serious gap in terms of experience
and we have not the same level of sailing practice
as can be showed from others".
In fact, the German expect to win the America’s
Cup. They are just not sure when it will happen.
"We lie if we say that we are already able
to drive our boat at the Alinghi, Prada or Oracle
level", Philippe Mourniac said. But the real
goal is not there.
"The first ambition is to gain as much experience
as possible as an appropriate way to prepare for
the future", he concluded. "If we conclude
after the Cup that it's necessary to create a big
team to perform, with over 100 people and two boats,
it will be the framework for our Challenge".
