On the strength of what he called
a “perfect day,” Denmark’s Jesper Bank won the round
robin at the Danish Open, Stage 2 of the 2006-’07
World Match Racing Tour, with an 11-0 record.
Bank, the reigning Danish Open champion and skipper
of United Internet Team Germany, began the day with
a 4-0 record. That meant he and his crew were on
the water all day long completing the round robin.
For winning the round robin Bank will get to choose
his semifinal opponent. That will either be Staffan
Lindberg (FIN), Alandia Sailing Team, Jes Gram-Hansen
(DEN), Mascalzone Latino – Capitalia, or Sebastien
Col (FRA), Areva Challenge.
Lindberg finished the round robin second at 8-3,
Gram-Hansen third at 7-4 and Col fourth, also at
7-4. Gram-Hansen beat Col head-to-head to place
third.
The match-racing was high quality. There were numerous
windward mark roundings where the leeward boat sailed
the windward boat nearly off the racecourse. There
were about 10 penalties issued, and there were come-from-behind
wins.
